SEO – Search Engine Optimization – stick to the basics

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

SEO stands for search engine optimization. Well, how does that apply to a web site? We all want hits (viewers) to see our products and services. SEO helps us to obtain higher (reverse order – number 1 is great) placement when someone performs a search within a search engine, like Google. However, many web sites commit a lot of resources to advertising, but obtain few hits.

The basics to remember with SEO are page title, meta tags, and link-backs. The page title is very important because it is another source to explain what your page is about to search engines. There are three basic meta tags: description, keywords and content. Description and keywords are about the page’s content. Everything mentioned in these meta tags should appear on the page. Do not get black listed because the meta tags and site content do not match.

Link-backs are probably not understood by most people in regard to SEO. The easiest way to consider link-backs is with the term World Wide Web (WWW). There are more web pages on the Internet than ever before, so search engines can not possibly spend the time trying to index orphaned (stand alone) web sites. What they do instead is go to popular web sites and follow links within that site. The more sites pointing to your site gains you points in web site ranking.

Get your meta tags correct and link-backs created and save some money advertising. Everything takes time and an Internet business is no different. Think about this: What is more important, to try to make some money on the tail end of a craze or be ready for the next boom on the Internet?
